Look For Safety And Performance In A Lifting Magnet Generator

Aug 2, 2011

When electromagnetic lifting equipment is used in yard or factory then it is possible to run cables from a fixed power supply but when the equipment needs to be mobile then a magnet generator is needed to supply the high tension current in any location. Diesel or gasoline engines can supply the power or then can be driven by a pulley of hydraulic pressure.

They need to be highly durable and reliable because they are often used in rough conditions and any failure could lead to a load being dropped which is a major safety concern. They also have to stand up to constant daily use.

Hydraulically powered units are ideal when the vehicle being used is already fitted with a pump such as on and excavator. It is normally separate unit which supplies electrical current but it is also possible to have a single unit which is combined with the lifting apparatus and which has the hoses connected directly to it. The combined units are controlled mechanically by turning the hydraulic pressure on or off.

When there is no auxiliary circuit to which the hydraulic fittings can be connected then it is possible to fit a priority valve into the line which will prevent fluctuations in pressure the primary equipment being supplied by the system. The pressure which is required also needs to be carefully matched to the output of the pump. If more electrical power is required then it will also need higher pressure being supplied.

Hydraulic units are very compact and can easily be connected as a single unit but when diesel or gasoline engines are being used it is best if they are mounted on a rigid steel base. All of the components can then be fitted into a compact unit and if direct coupling is used it will also reduce misalignment and prevent excess mechanical wear. Solid rubber mountings are also preferable to reduce vibration and lower the risk of arching in the controller.
A sufficient fuel tank is necessary for ongoing use without interruption. If a gasoline engine is being used then an electric fuel pump will be the safest because any rough terrain could cause a stall which would lead to the load being dropped.
To ensure that the output current is regulated a constant voltage controller can be used and if there is going to be significant resistance in the line then it can also be set up to 250VDC to ensure that the usable current is closer to 230VDC. For ease of use it is also possible to have a remote control for the magnet generator mounted in the cab of any vehicle.
